The Better Better

The Better Better

by Maxx Delaney

It is February and I am thinking about golf. I am thinking about high draws and holed putts. I am thinking about 60 yard wedge shots and touchy downhill chips. I am thinking about good friends and good times. I am thinking that I need to get some new gear. I am thinking about switching to a mallet putter. I am thinking about getting better. Better at golf. But also better at being a golfer.

On a good day, when golf comes easy and the ball goes where it should, it’s easy to be a good golfer. To make jokes with your group, to celebrate good shots, to balance staying focused and having fun. But on a bad day, when my golf swing stays at home and every putt breaks the wrong way, I can get so focused on the sport that I forget to be a good sport myself.

Because on those days, there are two ways to save a round. Shoot 33 on the back to crack 80, or start cracking beers and jokes and remember this is the only Saturday you’ve got this week.

This year, let’s get better at choosing the second option.
